Choose around how you will receive and retrieve mail, rather than whether an address looks like a street address.

Compare the actual workflow
| Question | Virtual mailbox | USPS PO box |
|---|---|---|
| Read contents remotely? | Check included content scans and page fees. | The rental is a pickup service; do not assume content scanning is included. |
| Collect originals? | Check forwarding, pickup availability, and storage. | Check the Post Office's access hours and parcel collection process. |
| Receive private-carrier parcels? | Confirm carrier and size restrictions at the location. | Some locations offer Street Addressing, subject to restrictions. |
| Use for filings or banking? | Confirm each address field separately. | Confirm each address field separately. |
When each option may fit
If you regularly travel and need to read letters without collecting them, evaluate a mailbox with scans. If you live near a Post Office and mostly want a separate place to collect originals, compare a PO box. Neither option automatically represents where you physically operate.
Collect a like-for-like quote
Write down monthly incoming letters, scanned pages, packages, pickup trips, and forwarding shipments. Compare the rental period, setup or key charges, scans, storage, and postage. A mailbox subscription and a prepaid PO-box rental should be compared over the same year.
Before choosing
- Check availability and exact pickup access.
- Confirm your business and recipient names are permitted.
- Ask whether package services are included or optional.
- Check the intended address use before paying.
Build a mailbox shortlist or compare both quotes in the address cost calculator.
