Home business setup checklist for freelancers

Use this as a planning sequence for a freelance or solo service business. Confirm the requirements that apply to your activity and location.

On this page

1. Define what you will do and where

Write down your services, where you will work, whether customers will visit, and whether you will store inventory or equipment. These details help identify local zoning, lease, licensing, and insurance questions. Starting from home does not automatically remove these requirements.

2. Choose a business structure deliberately

Compare the administrative, tax, and liability implications of operating individually or forming an entity. An LLC is not automatically the right choice for every freelancer, and forming one does not replace insurance, contracts, or sound business practices. Seek professional advice when the decision depends on your particular circumstances.

Compare formation services

A provider can help with filing steps. Check what is included, state charges, ongoing subscriptions, and your own filing responsibilities. You can also review direct filing options with your state.

3. Match addresses to their purposes

Choose how you will receive regular mail, where your business is physically based, and who will receive official notices if needed. Read virtual mailbox vs. registered agent and confirm what is accepted before using an address on a filing.

4. Verify registrations and permissions

5. Organize money and records

Choose a way to track income, expenses, invoices, contracts, and important dates. Ask your financial institution what information it needs for the account you want. Determine your tax registration and reporting responsibilities with the relevant authorities or a qualified professional.

6. Review risk and insurance

Your activity, contracts, equipment, and customer contact shape your insurance needs. Use our freelancer insurance guide to prepare questions for a licensed insurance professional.

About HomeBase

HomeBase helps US freelancers and solo home-business owners choose business mailing arrangements. We connect address-purpose guides, a setup checklist, and a worksheet using your quoted fees. Formation and insurance guides support the wider setup process. Our provider comparisons use published sources and do not claim hands-on testing.

Our checklist is a planning aid. State agencies, local authorities, financial institutions, and service providers determine their own requirements.

Your privacy

Your setup-finder answers stay in this browser session. The setup finder does not save your answers to a server. The optional contact form collects your name, email, topic, message, and email preferences so HomeBase can respond. In this local preview, inquiries are stored on this computer and no email is sent. The local preview records page views and tool or provider-link actions using an anonymous tab-session identifier. Questionnaire answers, costs, contact details, referral URLs, and IP addresses are not stored in these metrics. Local reporting honors the browser’s Do Not Track signal. The shared static cloud copy does not collect these metrics. No advertising cookies are used. We do not send contact submissions to mailbox providers.

Our hosting provider may process technical request information to serve and protect the site. Fonts load from Google Fonts. Provider websites have their own privacy and tracking policies.

Affiliate disclosure

HomeBase may earn a commission when you sign up through a qualifying affiliate link, at no additional cost to you. Links with approved tracking URLs may earn commissions; unconfigured links use ordinary provider pages.

Use the guides to compare services and check current terms directly with each provider. No provider has endorsed this checklist.
