Shipping and postage for a home business
Choose a workflow for sending customer orders, then compare the costs using real quotes.

Sending orders is different from receiving business mail
A virtual mailbox receives your mail and may forward it to you. Postage and shipping software helps you send letters or customer orders. A mailbox subscription does not automatically include outbound fulfillment, pickup, or permission to use its address for returns.
Choose the workflow before choosing a subscription
- Occasional letters or parcels: compare buying postage directly with a subscription. A paid plan may not be worthwhile at very low volume.
- Regular online orders: check whether your store or marketplace already provides suitable label tools before adding another service.
- Several selling channels: consider whether order imports, batch labels, tracking, or returns tools solve a recurring problem.
- International parcels: confirm destination availability, customs information, restrictions, and responsibility for duties and taxes.
Get quotes for a real packed shipment
Weigh and measure the packed parcel, identify origin and destination, and choose comparable delivery services. Prices can depend on weight, dimensions, route, service, surcharges, and account terms. An advertised discount is not a quote for your parcel.
For mixed orders, use a representative average of your actual quotes, or run the calculator separately for small, large, and international parcels. Do not compare a fast service with a slower one purely on price.
Compare postage, packaging, and shipping subscription costs
| Cost | Include in your estimate |
|---|---|
| Postage or label quote | The selected carrier service and known surcharges; check what the quote already includes. |
| Packaging | Boxes, mailers, protection, tape, and labels per shipment. |
| Other shipment fees | Unincluded insurance, signature, handling, or label charges. Avoid double counting. |
| Fixed costs | Monthly software, recurring add-ons, and any one-time setup or equipment cost. |
Our calculator compares two quoted workflows at your expected shipment volume. It shows first-month, ongoing monthly, first-year, and renewal estimates, along with the volume where a higher subscription can be offset by lower shipment costs. It does not look up carrier rates or verify plan limits.
Explore postage and shipping tools
Stamps.com is an option for online postage and label printing. ShipStation is an option for coordinating online-order shipping. Easyship offers multi-carrier shipping tools. Compare them with direct carrier tools and the shipping features already available from your sales platform. This is a starting shortlist, not a ranking or hands-on review.
Before you start a plan
- Check the countries, carriers, and services available to your account.
- Confirm shipment, store, user, and automation limits at your expected volume.
- Review trial conversion, recurring fees, cancellation, unused-label refunds, and postage adjustments.
- Confirm printer and scale requirements and any equipment cost.
- Ask how pickup, tracking, delivery issues, insurance claims, and returns are handled.
Keep your return address usable
Before putting a mailbox address on labels, ask the mailbox operator whether it accepts customer returns, your business name, parcel sizes, and expected volume. Confirm receiving and storage charges and how you will retrieve returned goods. A separate return address does not guarantee home-address privacy across filings, carrier accounts, customs documents, or platforms.
Read business address options for receiving arrangements. For customer orders, also organize invoices and business records. If you only need incoming mail forwarded, use the mailbox cost calculator instead.
